Day 3

Following breakfast we travel North and explore the Côte de Nuits, the part of the Côte-D’Or north of Aloxe-Corton.

First stop is Gevrey-Chambertin where the commune boasts nine Grand Crus and 26 Premier Crus – all red. Here we will explore the village and then travel the very short distance to the famous vineyard of Chambertin. Here we will enjoy a glass of this grand cru wine as we stand in the actual vineyard.

Then traveling south we stop at the Vineyard of  Musigny and taste this famous Grand Cru at the actual vineyard.

Next stop is Clos de Vougeot. This iconic walled vineyard was established by the Cistercian monks and we will visit their ancient wine making facility.

After visiting Clos de Vougeot we arrive at Vosne Romanee, the most famous red wine village in the world. We will enjoy a glass of Richebourg whilst leaning on the wall of Romanee Conti. Romanee Conti sells for up to $17,000(NZ) per bottle for recent vintages but Richebourg is of a quality that approaches it. A tasting of Romanee Conti can be arranged but there would clearly be a supplementary charge for this

Lunch is at Comte de Senard in Aloxe-Corton. This is a local producer and combined with lunch is a wine tasting (of course) of then Grand Crus of Corton and Corton Charlemagne. The vineyards of  Aloxe-Corton were established in the second century BC and is the only village to have Grand Crus in both colours, the only Grand Cru red in the Cote de Beaune and has the largest area of Grand Cru vineyards in the Cote D’Or. Its Grand Cru white wine, Corton Charlemagne, is so named because it was the favourite wine of Charlemagne.

Dinner tonight is at the La Garaudiere. This a local restaurant in Levernois where cooking takes place on a large open fire. This is a true local restaurant
